Ohio Concealed Carry Requirements

Introduction

Ohio offers a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) through county sheriffs.  Since June 2022, Ohio allows permitless carry, but the CHL remains valuable for reciprocity and legal advantages.

Eligibility

  • ✅ Age 21+

  • ✅ Ohio resident or employed in Ohio

  • ✅ No felony convictions

  • ✅ No drug-related offenses in last 5 years

  • ✅ Mentally competent

Required Training

Ohio requires 8 hours of firearms safety training, including:

  • 6 hours classroom instruction

  • 2 hours live-fire range qualification

Application Process

  1. Complete Training – Keep certificate

  2. Apply at County Sheriff’s Office – Bring ID, training proof, and fee

  3. Get Fingerprinted

  4. Wait for Processing – Up to 45 days

Fees

  • New: $67 (resident) or $77 (non-resident)

Reciprocity

Ohio CHL is valid in 38+ states.
