Florida Concealed Carry Requirements

Introduction

Florida’s concealed carry license, officially called the Concealed Weapon or Firearm License (CWFL), is one of the most recognized in the U.S., with reciprocity in over 30 states.  This guide covers everything you need to qualify, apply, and carry legally.

Eligibility

You must:

  • ✅ Be 21 or older (18 for active military)

  • ✅ Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident

  • ✅ Have no felony convictions

  • ✅ Not have been committed for drug/alcohol abuse or mental illness in the past 3 years

  • ✅ Meet federal firearm possession laws

Required Training

Florida requires proof of firearms competency. This can be met through:

  • NRA firearms safety course

  • Hunter safety course

  • Firearms training from law enforcement or military service

  • Online + range qualification from an approved provider


Application Process

  1. Complete Training – Obtain proof of competency

  2. Apply Online – Or in person at a tax collector’s office or Division of Licensing Regional Office

  3. Get Fingerprinted – At an approved location

  4. Submit Documents – Training proof, fingerprints, ID

  5. Wait for Approval – Usually 50–90 days

 

Fees

  • Initial: $97

  • Renewal: $45

 

Reciprocity

Florida’s CWFL is valid in 35+ states, but not all honor it.

Permitless Carry

As of July 1, 2023, Florida allows permitless concealed carry for eligible adults, but the CWFL still provides major reciprocity benefits.
