Colorado Concealed Carry Requirements

Introduction

Colorado issues concealed handgun permits (CHPs) through county sheriffs.  While requirements are less strict than in some states, you still need to meet training and eligibility rules.

Eligibility

  • ✅ Age 21+

  • ✅ Colorado resident

  • ✅ No felony convictions

  • ✅ No recent convictions for certain misdemeanors

  • ✅ Not subject to a protective order

 

Required Training

Colorado requires proof of handgun competence via:

  • Firearms safety course (in-person or online with live component)

  • Law enforcement or military training

 

Application Process

  1. Complete Training – Certificate required

  2. Apply at County Sheriff’s Office – In person only

  3. Submit Fingerprints – At application time

  4. Pay Fees – Varies by county

  5. Wait for Processing – 90 days or less

  • Varies by county (usually $52–$152)

 

Reciprocity

Colorado honors permits from 33 states; your Colorado CHP is valid in over 35 states.
