Iowa Concealed Carry Requirements

Introduction

Iowa is a “shall issue” state for concealed carry permits, officially called the Permit to Carry Weapons (PCW). Since July 2021, Iowa also allows permitless carry, but permits remain useful for reciprocity.

Eligibility

  • ✅ Age 21+

  • ✅ Iowa resident

  • ✅ No felony convictions

  • ✅ No recent violent misdemeanors

  • ✅ Not prohibited under federal law

Required Training

You must complete firearms safety training, which can include:

  • NRA courses

  • Hunter safety courses

  • Military training

  • Approved online training

Application Process

  1. Complete Training – Keep proof

  2. Apply at County Sheriff’s Office

  3. Submit ID, Training Proof, Fee

  4. Wait for Processing – Up to 30 days

Fees

  • New: $50

  • Renewal: $25

Reciprocity

Iowa honors permits from all states; Iowa PCW is valid in 30+ states.
