Illinois Concealed Carry Requirements

Introduction

Illinois has some of the most stringent concealed carry laws in the country.  If you want to carry legally, you must complete an extensive training process and meet all state eligibility criteria.

Eligibility

  • ✅ Age 21+

  • ✅ Valid FOID (Firearm Owner’s Identification) card

  • ✅ No felony convictions

  • ✅ No orders of protection against you

  • ✅ No recent violent misdemeanor convictions

Required Training

Illinois requires 16 hours of state-approved firearms training, including:

  • Classroom instruction (laws, safety, situational awareness)

  • Live-fire qualification (30 rounds at 5, 7, and 10 yards)

Application Process

  1. Complete 16-Hour Training – Keep your certificate

  2. Apply via ISP Website – Upload training proof and FOID

  3. Submit Fingerprints – Optional, but speeds processing

  4. Pay Fees – Online payment required

  5. Wait – Up to 90–120 days without fingerprints

Fees

  • New License: $150 (Residents)

  • Renewal: $150

Reciprocity

Illinois does not recognize any other state permits.  Out-of-state residents may apply for a non-resident Illinois permit if their home state’s laws are similar.
